New Approach To Chatham Cup
(New Zealand Press Association! WELLINGTON. Arrangements for the Chatham Cup Soccer competition will be investigated by the New Zealand Football Association. At Saturday’s meeting of the N.Z.F.A. Council it was decided to form a committee, of which Mr J. K. Smith will be chairman, to see if the present arrangements can be improved.
“The Chatham Cup should be played in the North Island one year and the South Island the next,” said Mr C. Dempsey (Auckland). “This would give the supporters of at least one team a chance to see the game. “A new look is required and the time has come for a new approach to the Chatham Cup. The present set-up can drain the resources of a team entering the final, and the time has come to put the trophy on a financial basis,” he said.
“The gate money from the North and South Island finals, and the final itself, should go into a collective pool with the money received from the televising of the games,” said the treasurer, Mr J. Cowie.
Paid To Clubs ‘This money could then be distributed to the clubs in the final. “The time has come to do away with paying the associations staging the finals an average gate attendance sum,” he said.
“At the moment we pay the associations the money they
would lose in staging the game, money they would receive if two local teams were playing.
“By paying the associations we are making the Chatham Cup unfinancial. Do away with paying them and the elubs concerned will not find themselves out of pocket for reaching the final,” said Mr Cowie. Mr Smith said that the inquiry would start almost immediately, and that he hoped to have it completed within a month.
