INNINGS DEFEAT

Familiar Bowling

Just failing to reach three figures in both innings. EastShirley went quietly to an innings defeat by 2.30 p.m. against Riccarton at Burwood Park.

Both innings were fairly sorry affairs but East-Shirley could take a measure of satisfaction in the batting of first, P. G. Coman and. in the second innings. G. A. Haase. It was almost certainly one of Coman’s best innings and rarely has he batted with such a sense of responsibility y'et without losing any of his attacking shots. Haase, who played one game for Nelson some four years ago, had displayed a straight bat and stout heart in the first innings and these qualities were in ample evidence again. The fragile middle-order batting of East-Shirley last season could well be stiffened by his presence.

The Riccarton bowling was the familiar story of R. C. Motz and J. W. Kiddey. In both innings they bowled the great majority of the overs and if Motz under-pitched too often, his fine control of swing was a very potent weapon.

.Equally impressive from Riccarton, though, was the very fine fielding.. Only one catch was dropped in both innings and nearly all of the returns were straight from the best text books.

Umpires: Messrs T. F. Mathie and S. E. Browne.
