LYTTELTON MAYORALTY

Mr Briggs To Seek Recount

The defeated Labour candidate in the Lyttelton mayoral election. Mr F. G. Briggs, said last evening he would apply for a magisterial recount.

Mr Briggs lost the election to the sitting mayor, Mr J. B. Collett by three votes—776 to 773—after leading Mr Collett by 737 to 628 in the provisional results on election night.

Mr Briggs said he would apply for the recount on his own behalf. Earlier, he said he was contemplating an application for a recount, but as a member of the Labour Party had first to discuss the matter with the party. He felt a recount was justified by the many declaration votes cast, said Mr Briggs.
