SEARCH FOR BOAT
No Sign Off N.I. Coast (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, Oct. 17. The search for the missing Napier crayfish boat Karena, overdue on a trip to Whitianga, will be resumed at daylight tomorrow.
Three aircraft are expected to take part and a Bristol freighter of the Royal New Zealand Air Force today searched the coastline down to the Bay of Plenty.
It returned to Whenuapai after a similar boat was seen sheltering in the lee of White Island. Investigations by the Auckland Search and Rescue controller, Mr T. W. Keals-Smith. proved this to be Ma Cherie, a deep sea fishing bo; An Air Force officer said tonight severe turbulence prevented the freighter descending to make a positive identification of the boat at White Island.
The Karena, with a crew of two, left Napier on October 9 and put into Hick’s Bay, north of Gisborne, last Tuesday. After reaching Whitianga, it was due to return to Napier at the week-end. On board are the owner, John Moir Spottswood, aged 24, of Lincoln road. Napier, and Kevin Edward Gannoway, aged 19, of the same address. The launch is 30 foot.
