CALIBRE OF ARMS
Americans Surprised (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY, October 17. Senior United States officers taking part in the threenation air forces exercises near Sydney were shocked to find that American, Australian and New Zealand aircraft are using different calibre weapons, the Sydney “SunHerald” reported today. The newspaper said some were concerned that the armaments standardisation problem between the three Pacific allies has not been settled.
They were surprised, it said, to learn at first hand that the R.A.A.F. uses different calibre rockets and cannon from those used by their own air force. They said that this means that in the event of an emergency in the Pacific area requiring a full-scale effort by the three air forces they would not be able to draw from common ammunition dumps.
Sukarno’s Call.— President Sukarno, in a speech broadcast over Radio Indonesia, today called on the “new emerging forces” to unite to smash foreign military bases throughout the world.—Singapore, October 17.
