Test To Slow Aircraft

British aviation experts yesterday started testing a new landing safety system—a carpet of gravel designed to slow a plane at the end of the runway. Scientists of the Royal Aircraft Establishment carried out the first test with a field car.

Roaring towards the 240 ft, I2in thick gravel patch at 70 miles an hour, the vehicle ■•topped without braking in 143 ft.

A spokesman said aircraft vould probably be tried out lext, using sand, shingle or ;hallow water at the end of :he runway.

The gravel carpet could also je used on roads.
