Thomson Wins

Play-Off

(N.Z.P.A -Reuter—Copyright) WENTWORTH (Surrey).

The Australian golfer, Peter Thomson, beat Christy O’Connor, of Ireland, yesterday morning in a “sudden-death” play-off to enter the semifinals of the Piccadilly world match-play tournament. Thomson won on the 37th hole. The two were deadlocked at the 36th green on Thursday and had to postpone their struggle because of approaching darkness. a < Thomson will meet Arnold Palmer, of America, in the semi-finals.

Thomson had been two up with six holes to play, but O’Connor came back by winning the 31st and 35th holes. Palmer, playing some fantastic golf, defeated Kel Nagle, of Australia, 3 and 2, with a score of nine under fours for 33 of the 34 holes he played. He picked up once.

The other two British players in the first round, Neil Coles and Peter Allis, were defeated by superior golf. Coles went down, 5 and 4, to the South African, GaryPlayer, while Alliss faded and lost by the same margin to the American, Tony Lerna.
