ELLESMERE SHOW
Entries Above
Average
Entries for the Ellesmere Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s annual show, the first of the spring shows in the South Island, which takes place at Leeston next Saturday, are again very satisfactory, although the total is a little less than that of last year, which was well above the average of recent years. Sheep entries show an increase, horses are down slightly and there will be fewer cattle, due mainly to family illness preventing the preparation of the Legg Ayrshires for the show ring. The shearing competitions, including a display of blade shearing, and the sheep dog trials will again be leading features. The Kennel Association’s show will be a championship feature.
Entries in the various sections with those of last year given in parentheses, are as follows: Sheep 316 (306), shearing 7 (8), dog trials 39 (56), horses 776 (820), cattle 212 (282), pigs 73 ( 57), goats 9 (15), dogs 16 (28), dairy and domestic produce 68 (112), needlework ICP (98), junior 458 (367), grain, seeds and roots 40 (93), total 2114 (2252). Entries for the flower section and the Kennel Association show are not included.
New Fire Station.—The Fire Service Council has approved the Christchurch Metropolitan Fire Board's proposal to build a new fire station at Diamond Harbour at an estimated cost of £6678.
