Space Progress
Sir, —In his article on space travel Mr Keay states that there are many well-kept secrets, and complains that the Soviet Union does not give out much advance information. It is best this way, because when the advertising and self-praise of the United States whenever they undertake a launching, including guff on the count-down, is compared with the silent, efficient and modest efforts of the Soviet Union, the first prize goes to the U.S.S.R. How often have the U.S.A, been forced to admit some failure which after all the boasting, sounds galling! Mr Keay is wrong. Quite a great deal of subsequent information has been published on the Soviet efforts. The fact remains that the Soviet Union has been first in most of the space shots, even though American sources described the first Soviet pictures of the hidden side of the moon as “fuzzy.”— Yours, etc., P.J.A.
