Look, No Hands

(N.Z. Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, Oct. 10. A motorised railway jigger left four Hawera policemen dumbfounded on the platform of the Normanby railway station early this morning. Called to investigate a burglary at the Nonnanby Post Office, which is on the railway station, the police sent for a post office official to assist them. A few minutes later they saw the light of a jigger approaching along the railway from the direction of Hawera. It

appeared the post office man had decided to come by rail, so the officers awaited the jigger’s arrival. But the jigger just kept going. It sped straight past the railway station ... driverless. Later investigation showed that the jigger had been stolen from Kakaramea. about 13 miles south of Hawera. It was recovered near Eltham, 12 miles to the north. How far it had travelled driverless is still a mystery.
