Excuse For Failure Of Fair Summer
(N.Z. Press Association) MELBOURNE. A stewards’ report says the New Zealand-bred colt. Fair Summer, had a lacerated mouth after his failure in the Caulfield Guineas on Saturday. Fair Summer started as the 11/8 favourite and finished third last In a field of 16 in the Guineas, won by the Melbourne colt, Star Affair. When Fair Summer returned to the enclosure, a veterinary stipendiary steward, Mr J. Bourke. inspected the colt and ordered him swabbed. After the jockey, D. Lake, weighed in. the stewards called him for questioning. The stewards’ report suggests that the state oi Fair Summer’s mouth killed all the eolt’s natural keenness to race. Although cleared to race in
Melbourne by the Victorian Racing Club committee, the New Zealand galloper, Valuate, could still miss a run in Saturday’s Caulfield Cup. He may be balloted out under the final balloting clause, although he qualified under the other six clauses. There are 36 fully eligible horaes ahead of Valuate, and the field for the cup must be reduced to 20 runners. Valuate could be eliminated under clause seven which, in case of a ballot, eliminates the lowest-weighted horses, according to age. A five-year-old, Valuate has 7-6, and is the Lightest-weighted of the “eligible” candidates. Two other heavily-backed cup candi dates also may miss the start. They are the fourth favourite. Matloch, a New Zealander, and the Sydney horse, Rakala.
