Sail Away Favoured For Melbourne Cup

<N Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) MELBOURNE. The New Zealand stayer, Sall Away, has returned to:favourism at 7/1 for the £30.000 Melbourne Cup after a brilliant trial gallop yesterday. Running 10 furlongs, he reduced by almost two seconds the Mentone track record set four years ago by the weight-for-age horse Dhaplagiri. Sail Away managed the distance on a track softened by rain in 2min lOjsec, a time which both surprised and delighted his trainer. S. Brown. The five-year-old gelding will race in the Coongy Handicap at Caulfield tomorrow. If he runs well then, could also start in the Caulfield Cup on Satur day. Sail Away was handicapped with 8-7 in both cups and has qualified to start in the Caul field Cup, but Brown says the Melbourne Cup is Sail Away’s main target. Until today’s gallop he was equal favourite for the Melbourne Cup with Craftsman, but since then his price has been cut by one point leaving him a clear favourite, with Craftsman alone on the second line. They are the only two in the field quoted at under 10/1.

Another New Zealand horse to do well yesterday was Royal Duty, at present on the fourth line of the Caulfield Cup market. Royal Duty will run in the Caulfield Stakes, the weight-for-age event, which is regarded as a nipe-opener for the Caulfield Cup. The South Australtan-owned. New Zealand-bred mare. Light Fingers, the 5/1 favourite for the Caulfield Cup, will also run in the Caulfield Stakes tomorrow.

The four-year-old New Zea-land-bred gelding. Carnival, which finished third in the A.J.C. Metropolitan a week ago, will start in the Coongy Handicap to try to qualify for a start in the Caulfield Cup. He will be

ridden by the season's leading jockey, D. Lake.
