Trentham Fancies To Go North Tonight

Royal Bid and Shipmate, two Riccarton-trained horses likely to have heavy backing in the double at Trentham on Saturday, will be taken north tonight.

Royal Bid, the topweight in the Wellington Handicap, will be accompanied north by Tracy’s Comet, which will run in distance hack races at the meeting.

V. D. Clutterbuck brought Royal Bid and Tracy’s Comet by float from Templeton for a gallop on the plough at Riccarton yesterday, but the chestnuts did not have to show their best speed. Royal Bid was keen to quicken after running the final half-mile in 56 3-ssec. and the final three ■ furlongs in 41 4-ssec. Shipmate is one of a team

of five to be taken north by J. C. Tomkinson. The others are Pharasal, Hushaway, Caprino, and Court. Court has no engagement on Saturday. Pharasal and Caprino are rival candidates in the October Hack Handicap. A. J, Stokes, the stable horseman, is expected to ride Pharasal. A. H. Eastwood will ride Hushaway, one of the light-weights in the Wainui Handicap. Form Rmiuer Natter, another form runner from Riccarton in the October Hack, will be taken north via Picton tomorrow. R. J. Skelton will ride Natter. This was a successful combination in the Wingatui race last season. Skelton has also been engaged for Cumberland in the Heretaunga Hack Handicap, but no-one had been engaged yesterday morning for Cumberland’s stablemates. Pee Wee (Wellington Guineas) and Gunga Din (October Handicap). A. J. Williams will go north with Cumberland. Pee Wee and Gunga Din on Thursday. Castle Flight and Captain’s Command, two more of R. J. Skelton’s mounts on Saturday, will come north from Wingatui today and will cross to Wellington tomorrow night. The same programme will be followed with Grand Prix and Red Sash, which will be ridden at Trentham by B. P.

Kennedy. Red Sash will have a big southern following in the Wellesley Stakes after two brilliant wins at the Dunedin spring meeting.
