“The Press” In 1865
September 22. PANTECNATHECA.—The exhibition of the panorama of American scenery, a voyage across the Atlantic, &c., was well patronised last night, the Town Hall being moderately full. Many of the views met with a capital reception. The distribution of prizes, which concluded the entertainment, seemed to afford general satisfaction and amusement. Everyone on entering the hall is supplied with a programme, on which a number has been placed, and the lecturer, at the conclusion of the performance, draws the winning ones. The prizes are of rather a heterogenous character, consisting of bread baskets, meerschaum pipes, ladies* dressing cases, &c.; and no little amusement is
caused by the fact that a lady obtains a meerschaum pipe, and probably the gentleman a lady’s dressing case. KOHLERS SWIMMING BATHS.— These baths are now fast approaching completion. The area is seventy feet by thirty, with a depth at the one end of ten feet, and at the other of four. The water is supplied by an artesian well, kept continually flowing, and by this means is constantly being changed. Every convenience to bathers will be afforded; the dressing rooms about thirty in number, being neatly arranged, carpeted, &c.; and no doubt during the next summer, Mr Kohler will meet with that encouragement which he certainly deserves, for being the first to supply a want that has been long felt in Christchurch.
