Against Any More Private Pavilions

An application by the Nomads Association Football Club for permission to build a gymnasium and committee rooms on a council reserve, preferably Bishopdale Park, was refused by the Waimairi County Council last night.

The finance committee reported that the County Clerk CMr K. Maclachlan) had told the committee meeting of noise nuisance which had caused complaints about the pavilion on the Upper Riccarton domain. The committee might feel disposed to allow building alongside the shopping centre at Bishopdale, but the council had nothing definite from the Lands and Survey Department on the proposed vesting of the reserve in the council. The committee’s recommen dation, adopted by the council, was that the council tell the club that it would not allow any more private pavilions on reserves, but would grant the club “home ground” rights on the Bishopdale reserve when it had been vested, and would provide dressing sheds for all sports. It was suggested that the club could buy land on which to put up its own building.

Cr. R. J. Reynolds, it was reported, had told the works committee that there was a proposal to build a tavern on the Bishopdale site. He was against it, as the area was sufficiently served by hotels.

Not Allowed.—A request from the Canterbury Centre

of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association for permission to hold 10-mile road championships on Ham road, Hamilton avenue. Clyde road and Kirkwood avenue was declined, on the ground of interference with traffic, and it was agreed to suggest to the centre that it use a course at Lincoln.

No Objection.—Cr. A. C. Rhodes was given permission to depart from the district planning scheme with a service station at the corner of Riccarton road and Newnham terrace. He had withdrawn from the town planning committee meeting at which the application was discussed.

Park Cabins.—A tender of £3686 Us was accepted to build two double-unit cabins in rusticated board at Spencer Park.

Parking. Footballers parked cars on the verge of Fendalton Park, and Fendalton Bowling Club members wanted to know why they could not do the same, reported the works committee. The council agreed to allow the club parking privileges for a trial period.

Restoration. — On the recommendation of the finance com mittee, the council decided to tell the contractors that, because of current commitments, it could not carry out road restoration of Grimsey's road after sewer-laying. Drainage.—The works committee reported that the Drainage Board had pointed out that 16 Trafford street properties could be served by open drains along the rear of the sections. It was decided to let the residents know the position.

Crossings.—The council decided to tell the National Roads Board that it could not support a pedestrian crossing on the Main North road at Tuckers road unless the headmaster of the Tucker’s Road School gave an undertaking to have it school patrolled. It was agreed to have a crossing outside the Islesworth School on Farrington avenue on a similar basis.

Plunket Rooms.—Approval was given for the building of rooms for the Bryndwr Plunket Society at 57 Kendal avenue.
