BISHOPDALE HOTEL
Council Not Opposed
Approval in principle for the construction of a hotel at the Bishopdale shopping centre was confirmed by the Waimairi County Council last night, when it discussed evidence it would give to the Licensing Control Commission later this month. The council defeated by six votes to four a motion by Cr. H. J. Reynolds that the council disapproved of a hotel at Bishopdale, but would favour the location of a tavern within a mile and a half of other licensed premises in the Harewood area.
, Cr. Reynolds said the council hoped to get a 15-acre reserve at Bishopdale. A hotel would take five acres that could ill be spared. The County Engineer (Mr I. Calvert) said council approval of the Bishopdale site had been “tagged” subject to the provision of extra parkland. “I don’t think it would be good to have licensed premises in a commercial area," said Cr. Reynolds. “A hotel should be in a rural area.” Cr. A. E. Wagner said that if someone wanted to put a hotel on the commercial area at Bishopdale, the council could not stop it.
There was not enough commercial land left at Bishopdale for a hotel, said the Clerk (Mr K. MacLachlan). The council decided to tell the commission that it favoured trust control for any new licence.
