SINGER AS A SOLDIER
Hore Called In Ballot
"The Press" Special Service DUNEDIN.
Exchanging his guitar for a gun, New Zealand’s country and Western singer John Hore may become a private next January.
John, who has been called up by ballot to spend 14 weeks in the Army, said: “It had to come, and I may as well get it over with.” Called up the same time as John is George Laing, a member of the band which backs his recordings. John’s' manager, Mr Joe Brown, said he hoped that John would go into the Army late in January. “I hope it’s not the early part of January, for we have engagements already booked.”
Mr Brown has thought of appealing for deferment of training, but John thinks it may be better to be finished with it.
He may have to miss part of next year's “Miss New Zealand” tour, but he may have a chance of going to America and would like to get his military training “over and done with.”
Mr Brown will travel to Auckland later this month to see a director of the Hollywool Bowl in the hope that John may be able to tour the United States. After his present New Zealand tour John will go to Australia, where he has television and nightclub offers in Sydney and Melbourne. He will be back in New Zealand for a Christmas tour.
