LAUNCH SINKS

Explosion In Bay (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sept. 6. Firemen battled waist deep in water tonight in an unsuccessful attempt to save the 28ft motor launch White Rose which exploded and later sank in Brown’s Bay, Paremata, near Wellington. Petrol fumes ignited when an attempt was made to start the vessel about 9 p.m. The owner, Mr R. B. McDonald, of Barnard street, Wadestown, Wellington, was on board with a friend, Mr B. Paul, Of Oriental Bay.

Mr Paul was treated for burns on his hands by a Plimmerton doctor. Members of the Plimmerton Fire Brigade rowed in a dinghy to the launch, which was moored about 250 ft offshore.

They managed to bring the launch closer to the shore and firemen stood waist deep in icy water to get within range of the blaze.

The White Rose, completely burnt out, sank in five feet of water.
