GARMENT OFFENDS
Firm Strikes Its Colours
NEW YORK, Sept. 3
Panties called “Stars ’n’ Stripes” are being withdrawn from the United States market because they offended the Daughters of the American Revolution. In a letter to the manufacturers, a D.A.R. official called the panties—advertised as the “wildest, craziest interpretation of pop art ever”—a “shocking caricature” of the United States flag. “Patriotism should be encouraged by proper respect to the Stars and Stripes, the symbol of this great country and the many opportunities enjoyed here,” the D.A.R. said.
The panties were one of four new garments put on the market last week.
The waist is decorated with eight blue stars on a background of white. The legs contain red and white vertical stripes.
Harry L. Gross, secretarytreasurer of the firm, said that after the D.A.R. letter was received a board meeting was called and a decision was made to recall the article because “the DA.R. or any other organised group can spread comment that would I be detrimental to us.” I About 3000 “Stars ’n' Stripes” panties had been disItributed.
