SANDERS TEAM
Six Flown To Aust. (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. Six horses trained in Te Awamutu by W. Sanders left Whenuapal yesterday by air for the Australian spring racing carnivals at Randwick and Flemington. The horses were Rochdale, Lu Filou, My Call, Bombay, Ironbark, and Royal Marine, and were accompanied by Sanders. Next Friday, the Woodville trainer, S. A. Brown, will fly his team of five—Halcyon, Jen Hal, Sail Away, Dark Smudge, and Min Flicka. But the 1964 Melbourne Cup winner, Polo Prince, will not make the trip. There is also a doubt about Trial Offer. The Sanders flight at Whenuapai went off without a hitch. It was anticipated that trouble might be experienced with Rochdale and the three-year-old, Royal Marine, but, after a little coaxing, both horses walked up the ramp with confidence.
Sanders said he proposed to race all six horses at Rosehill on September 18. He might not have been in such a hurry to give them a race but for the cancellation of the Auckland meeting.
Beside Sanders the team was accompanied by the owners, Messrs R. Hodgson and J. Harrison, the jockeys, J. P. Riordan and F. Osborne, and one stable attendant.
Riordan will ride all the team with the exception of My Call, for which B. F. Andrews has been Both Rochdale and My Call are to contesUthe £lO,OOO Epsom Handicap at Randwick. Lu Filou will have a couple of tune-up races as a lead to the A.J.C. Metropolitan Handicap. There is a doubt about Trial Offer, whhcb ' was scratched on Thursday for the Flying Thousand at Wanganui today. “Trial Offer has been suffering from a severe chill in the kidneys,’’ said its part-owner and trainer, B. Hayter, yesterday. “She’s lost half a hundredweight in condition and naturally I am not pleased with her fitness, especially as I originally intended to fly her across with Brown’s team next Friday.”
No definite decision will be made for Trial Offer until early next week.
Trial Offer is the present second favourite for both the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups and was freely considered to be one of New Zealand’s outstanding prospects in the rich Melbourne races.
Palisade Back In Work
"The Press" Special Service DUNEDIN.
D. P. Wilson has made a fresh start with three members of his team which raced with distinction last season. They are Palisade, Big Smoke and Llanmai. All three have come through the winter well and are in first class order for a fresh preparation. Big Smoke has got to the cantering stage on the track while the other two- so far have been restricted to road work. Palisade’s four successes—the H. R. Chalmers Handicap of two miles, and the Summer Handicap at Trentham, the Metropolitan Handicap, at Riccarton, and the Wattie Presentation Handicap, at the Manawatu meeting, earned £7850 for his Heriot breeder, Mr A. T. Ottrey. Big Smoke, which races in the colours of his trainer, won six races for £1935 in stakes.
