RACING BOLD VENTURE PICKED
Open Sprint At Wingatui Today “The Press” Special Service DUNEDIN. Bold Venture, which was third to Monetary and Flying York in the Stewards’ Handicap on the opening day of the Wellington Racing Club’s winter meeting, makes strong Appeal in the G. J. Barton Memorial, the six-furlong sprint and the second leg of the Otago Hunt Club’s T.A.B. double at Wingatui today.
Bold Venture failed at his next two starts, but he has had time to freshen up since racing on the opening day of the Grand National meeting. A lower scale of weights today will mean that Bold Venture will carry 8-10 as against 9-2 he carried in the Trentham mud. He will be ridden by last season’s leading jockey, R. J. Skelton, who has been associated with the Underwood gelding in most of his successes.
Bold Venture has shown his best form over today’s dis tanee. At the weights, two of lasd season’s top two-year-olds
Summer Magic and Captain’s Command, look well placed. Neither horse has raced for some time, but they have both come to hand well and are in
top order to start their three-year-old careers. Summer Magic will be ridden by R. T. Casey, who is apprenticed to Summer Magic’s Gore trainer, E. A. Winsloe. Casey has had little race-riding experience. Captain’s Command is not a certain starter because of the change in the track conditions. If he does not start the apprentice, A. J. Tweedie, will have the mount on Highland Fair, a most impressive last start winner in intermediate company.
Summer Magic, Captain’s Command, and Middy, topweight in the Vauxhall Handicap, the hack sprint, are likely to play a leading role in the Dunedin Guineas on the second day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s spring meeting.
Waverley, third in the Paparua Handicap, on the first day of the Grand National meeting, has been working well and he could show up in his first race in the colours of Mr and Mrs J. F. Tutton, of Christchurch.
Warfare, Baalbek, which will be bracketed with Summer Magic, Friar’s Birthday, Staiinette. Cassarook, and Waihola have not raced for some time and they will have to be taken on trust.
Kumai, although he will be suited by the going, is likely to find the distance too short. The Wanderer, although at the veteran stage, won as recently as May and he has been working with rare dash and he could be the surprise runner in this field.
Benefice, although he has not raced since the New Zealand Cup meeting in November, has been working well and could be one of the best prospects at the foot of the handicap.
