Empyreus And Maria Mitchell Likely Double

“The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON. Empyreus should win the Newman Handicap, first leg of the T.A.B. double at Wanganui today. The second leg, the Wanganui One Thousand, is much more open and Maria Mitchell, Kintyre and Lei are only three of a number of strong possibilities. The race Empyreus had under 10.0 at Foxton has obviously not harmed him. If anything, it has brought him well forward, as he showed by his great second in the matinee at Hastings on Thursday. It was only a sprint Empyreus contested at Foxton and the distance was about the same again at Hastings, but in each race Empyreus came to the post effortlessly and with a goo 3 deal in hand.

Outside of Empyreus in the Newman Handicap, the field is open, but Big Bill and Canless look the best.

Big Bill came with a fine finish for third at Foxton and he did not get his rails-open-ing till late. He had lost a good place early, so it was partly his own fault. Better positioned today he could extend Empyreus. Capless, too, finished well, if not fast, at Foxton and with that race behind him and on the roomier track he should be closer to the money. The last time Capless raced at Wanganui he came third. Locally-trained Le Plus won well at his last start and is working satisfactorily. He races near the front, an advantage in a big field.

African was only narrowly beaten the last time he raced at Wanganui. He then failed at Carterton, but he blew after the race. His final trial at Woodville was particularly pleasing. The track might be a little firm for Maria Mitchell in the Wanganui Thousand, but she has such a fund of pace and raced so well at Auckland at her last start that she will be hard to catch.

Kintyre has done well since his Foxton race, his first since the autumn. He worked brilliantly on Thursday. The distance should not be too short for Lei because there is a good run down the back from the starting chute. R. A. Jenkins, who is on Lei, has ridden back-runners to win open sprints at Wanganui, notably King of Joy and That’s That. Selections: 11.30 a.m.—Seafield Handicap: Chatty Lady, Olympian.
