‘Nuclear Power Station By 1980’
(From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, Sept 3. New Zealand’s first nuclear power station would probably come into service between 1976 and 1980, the Minister of Electricity (Mr Shand) told Parliament today.
During discussion of the Electricity Department estimates, he said this would mean a site should be selected in the next 18 months. “We will really have to get down to decision-making about 1968,” he said. After Sir Leslie Munro (Govt., Waipa) had asked what progress was being made with research into the establishment of a nuclear power station, Mr Shand said he was sure site research would be far enough advanced for a decision to be made next year The construction of a nuclear station was being
taken into account at present in the planning of transmission line routes. There was considerable doubt about the type of nuclear station New Zealand should have. The biggest problem would be disposal of waste.
“We hope that by the time we come to make a decision someone will have found the answer and there will be a machine producing no waste. The British say, though, it might be 1969 before they have a solution,” said Mr Shand.
