QUIET AT PARK
Protesters And Patrol In the rain and cold, it was all quiet at Lancaster Park last night. Two members of the Canterbury University Students’ Anti-apartheid Committee stood vigil outside the main gates,, but their big banner proclaimed “Support black South Africa—boycott apartheid Rugby” to an empty street.
The students were to maintain an all-night vigil under their banner—each pair taking a two-hour shift—but they do not intend any active demonstration today before the third Rugby test. A security firm employed by the Victory Park Board (which controls Lancaster Park) maintained an all-night patrol of the park and its precincts. Two vehicles and several men were engaged. And with memory of the digging up of the Basin Reserve on the eve of the cricket test against South Africa last year, two uniformed policemen were also on all-night duty at the park.
