CHARGES ON CARGO

Discussion By Chamber

The Canterbury Chamber of Commerce on Monday again debated wharf handling charges. A report from the chairman of the chamber’s transport committee (Mr R. C. Wallace) gave details of recent moves to decide on a point of demarcation between wharfhandling and shipping freight charges. The chamber adopted two recommendations of its transport committee. These recommendations have been conveyed to the Associated Chambers, and in turn to the Minister of Labour (Mr Shand). They were: (1) That, whatever the line of demarcation for the determination of wharf handling charges, as distinct from freight rates, minority representation be given to users of New Zealand ports on the directorate of the stevedoring and wharfingering company or companies. (2) That provided effect is given to the first recommendation, the line of demarcation be the book. The chamber’s president (Mr A. R. Mackay) said that as far as the chamber knew the status quo remained in ports throughout New Zealand.

The chamber also adopted a resolution to promote ways and means of studying internal transport costs in New Zealand.
