University Entrance To Be Reviewed
(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, Sept. 3. A complete review of university entrance standards and methods will be made by a committee appointed this week by the New Zealand Universities Entrance Board.
This will revive an inquiry deferred by the board about 18 months ago when it decided that the entrance bursary scheme was more urgent and easier in solution. “The approval of the new upper sixth form bursary scheme creates a new environment in which to examine the whole entrance system,” said the chairman of the University Grants Committee (Dr. F. J. Llewellyn) this evening.
The entrance board had appointed its Wellington members, the university liaison officers in Waikato (Miss E. Boyd) and Wellington (Mr R. Hogg) and a high school adviser still to be named to make recommendations to the
board, Dr. Llewellyn said. Their work would probably take a year. The investigation would cover the form of entrance qualification, including accrediting. Examiners for the new bursary scheme were now
being sought for appointment before the end of the year. They would prepare sample test papers on the scope of the new examination by February or March. This would be given to schools to indicate required standards. Dr. Llewellyn said about 3500 candidates were expected for the first bursary examinations next year. About half of these were expected to obtain A or B passes qualifying for bursaries of £5O and £3O respectively. This total compared with about 15,000 candidates for university entrance next year.
