‘EXPORTS DOUBLED’
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, September 3. An Auckland meat exporter today challenged the allegation that local companies were not doing enough to increase exports to European countries. A spokesman for an Auckland exporter, R. and W. Hellaby, Ltd., said exports to most European countries had risen sharply in the last two years.
In many cases they had doubled in the last 10 months, he said.
Veterinarians from practically every European country had visited New Zealand freezing works to approve inspection and dressing facilities. In the last two years more than £4 million had been spent improving facilities to meet top hygiene standards. For the nine months ended in June, exports to Germany were 11,743 tons, compared with 4375 tons in the same period of 1963-64. Exports to Holland had almost doubled with the tonnages increasing from 1563 in 1963-64 to 2936 this season. Sweden jumped from 349 tons to 544 tons, and French imports were up from 1610 tons to 2282 tons.
The main problem was not promoting or exhibiting meat, but getting enough of the right type to satisfy a booming world demand.
