March Of Medicine £80,O00 Given, First Fellowship Awarded
More than £BO,OOO had been collected in the march of medicine appeal for the development of higher medical education and research for specialist physicians, the president of the Royal Australasion College of Physicians (Dr. M. Williams) said yesterday. A special travelling fellowship for £2OOO, to enable a New Zealand physician to undertake further training overseas, had been awarded to Dr. B. R. Cant, of Auckland, to promote his further training and experience in the physiology of the central nervous system.
Dr. Cant, aged 31, was admitted to the college in 1964 and recently held appointments at Auckland and Green Lane Hospitals. He had already shown marked ability in the special fields he had selected for his higher studies, said Dr. Williams. “It is expected that, with the help of this fellowship, he will eventually continue his training at the National Hos-
pital, Queen square, and the Hospital for Sick Children, Great Ormond street, London, thereafter returning to New Zealand.
“He should bring back a very thorough training in the practice of neurology and a knowledge of basic neurophysiology that will contribute to the better diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the central nervous system, and will also be of considerable assistance to neurosurgical services,” said Dr. Williams.
