ANTARCTIC PAINTING
i "Copier Rides . As Prizes { Helicopter rides will be given to all the main prizewinners in the children’s Antarctic Week painting competition. The commander of the United States Antarctic base at Hare wood (Commander W. H.Withrow) announced this at a meeting of the Antarctic Week Committee. Entries for the competition were reported to be poor, said the chairman (Mr H. P. Smith). It had been suggested that circulars be sent to schools.
“We have an additional incentive, which may generate more enthusiasm,” said Commander Withrow, informing the committee that helicopters would be available. The prize-winning painters might well be some of the flrst children in the country to travel in helicopters, said the secretary (Mr C. N. Todd).
There was not sufficient time for the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Antarctic Society to hold a photographic competition, said the president (Mr H. F. Griffiths). Instead a collection of about 60 photographs taken on the Balleny Islands was being lent by the Dominion Museum, and would be on display during Antarctic Week.
“These photographs arc some of the first that have been taken on the Balleny Islands,” said Mr Griffiths. “They are unique.” The committee decided not to hold a wreath-laying ceremony at Scott's statue, as had been planned. Quite a nv ’ber of proble i had arisen, Mr Smith said, including difficulty over the time.
Antarctic Week activities will include an open day at Christchurch Airport, with flying, static and displays by United States and Royal New Zealand Air Force planes; and a civic evening.
