Tow Cable Breaks

(N.Z. Press Association) MASTERTON, August 29. An attempt to haul the 60ft Napier trawler Proton off Castlepoint beach failed tonight when the towing cable broke. Bulldozers had dug a deep trench round the Proton which was continued out towards the sea. Another Napier trawler, the Pania, which had been standing by since dawn, hauled the Proton about 180 feet before the cable broke. Conditions had been ideal for the salvage attempt because of a heavy swell. The 40-ton Proton went aground in the middle of Castlepoint beach at 8 a.m. on Thursday after its gearbox failed.
