Six Die On Roads At Week-End
Six were killed in week-end road accidents throughout New Zealand. One of the fatal accidents was at a level crossing in Hornby, another just north of the Haast river bridge.
Level Crossing A youth was killed instantly when the car he was driving was struck by a goods train at the Carmen road crossing at 2.32 a.m. on Saturday. He was Alan Grahame Goulding. aged 20, an air frame mechanic, of the R.N.ZA.F. station. Wigram. He was the son of Mr and Mrs J. M. Goulding. of Allandale R.D„ Fairlie.
Mr Goulding's car was wrecked when it was dragged about 30ft along the track. Mr Goulding was thrown out of the car and was trapped on the ground with one arm entangled in the wreckage. The goods train, which was travelling from Springfield to Christchurch, was driven by Mr A. B. Ransome, of 78 Gilberthorpes road, Islington. It was travelling about 20 miles an hour. One young man was killed, and his companion injured, when the motor-car in which they were travelling hit a tree
about two miles north of the Haast river bridge on Saturday, the Press Association reported. The man killed was Leslie Hopkinson, aged 22, of Temuka, the driver of the car.
Noki Barrett, aged 22, also of Temuka, was seriously injured. He is in the Westland Hospital.
Police are not certain when the accident occurred or whether Hopkinson died instantly.
The men were found yesterday morning by a farmer but it is believed the accident might have occurred some hours earlier.

Motor-Cyclist Dies
A man died at the New Plymouth Hospital yesterday from injuries suffered in a motor-cycle accident on Friday. He was David John Hayes, aged 27, of Beach road, Omata. He was involved in an accident with a car at an intersection in New Plymouth. Two Killed
Two Ministry of Works men returning from a night helping motorists on stormdamaged Albany Hill died on Saturday morning when their car was involved in a collision with a van at Dairy Flat. A third Ministry of Works man and the driver of the van were seriously injured.
The dead men were: William Hillman, aged about 50, of Main road, Hilltop, Orewa. Robert Baird Cleland, aged 66, of Hillcrest road, Orewa North.
The injured men are Richard Jeffers, of Centreway
road, Orewa, and Brian John Lipsham, aged 19, a student, of Titirangi road, New Lynn.
Mr Jeffers was the driver of the car in which the two men died. Mr Lipsham was the driver of the van. They were both admitted to Middlemore Hospital. The accident occurred about 8.20 a.m., not far from the Dairy Flat School, which is about 18 miles north of Auckland on the main highway.
The Ministry of Works men had been working most of the night on the hill north of Albany, where slips had fallen across the road in at least four places. Two ambulances- rushed to the accident and took the injured men to hospital. Fractured Skull
Mr D. Rigby, a mechanic, of Papawai terrace, Newtown, suffered a fractured skull late on Saturday night when his car spun out of control on Aotea quay and hit a safety fence.
