TWO HORSES KILLED
Stable Fire
In U.S. (N.Z.P. A. -Reuter—Copyright) SALEM (New Hampshire). Fire raged through a large stable at Rockingham Parke race track on Tuesday, killing at least two thoroughbred horses, United Press International reported. It was the second major blaze at the track in nine days. The blaze erupted shortly after 11 p.m. local time in a barn at the northern edge of the sprawling park. Stablehands led 45 to 50 thoroughbreds from the barn after a night watchman discovered the blaze.
However, at least two horses raced back into the stable and perished, a park official said. Police said the fire threatened several nearby stables but only one burned. Firemen and equipment from neighbouring communities in nearby New Hampshire and Massachusetts brought the blaze under control shortly after midnight. Nineteen thoroughbreds were killed in a half-million dollar fire at Rockingham on the night of August 15. The stable that burned on Tuesday was about 200 yards from the scene of the earlier fire. Insurance investigators arrived at the track shortly after the blaze was brought under control to assess the damage and try to determine the cause.
