Farmers Support Teachers’ Demands
(New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, August 25. Otago Federated Farmers today supported recommendations for improving the standard of education in district high schools made recently by a meeting of Otago head teachers, senior secondary assistants and committee chairmen.
The meeting was called by the Otago Education Board, which informed Federated Farmers that it was particu-
larly concerned with 13 dis | trict high schools. The meeting decided to inform the Minister of Educa-[ tion (Mr Kinsella) that it endorses the recommendations, and also the teachers’ call for better buildings, equipment and housing. The recommendations endorsed were: Payment of special allowances to secondary teachers at district high schools of £2OO a year where the secondary roll is less than 76, and £l5O where it is more. The appointment of at least two teachers in secondary departments. The deeming of all senior secondary assistants as holding positions of responsibility. More leave for teachers to attend refresher courses and better opportunities for them to complete degrees. The appointment of those graduating with bursary assistance initially to district high schools. The implementation of the Education Commission recommendation that forms l-to-6 schools be established.
