WORK WENT SMOOTHLY
Somerset At
Cashin Quay
Shortly after 7 a.m. on Friday, the Lyttelton deputy Harbourmaster (Captain J. Duncan) piloted the cargo liner Somerset alongside Cashin quay. By 8.30 a.m. she was moored and shortly after 9 a.m. the first sling of cargo came ashore to the transit shed. The Somerset is the second vessel to work cargo at Cashin quay, and the first to discharge directly into the new transit shed, using tractors and trailers on the new quay. Cargo officials said discharging had gone smoothly and surface conditions had been ideal for the vessel to lie alongside. With eight gangs working (five crane gangs and three ship’s gear gangs) it is expected the Somerset will complete discharging today and sail for Dunedin.
