LEPERS GET SANDSHOES
Christchurch Firm’s Gift Hundreds of lepers throughout the South Pacific are wearing rubber-soled sandshoes produced by a Christchurch manufacturer. The provision of footwear, to protect ulcerated feet and prevent the spread of infection, is one of the big problems in the equipment of leper hospitals.
The free-of-cost shoes are rejects, with only minor faults, and the manufacturer gives them to the Lepers’ Trust Board, which makes up large consignments for dispatch to the island hospitals. “Many, many thanks from all of us at Tetere for the cases of sandshoes, used clothing, and sewing machines from the Lepers’ Trust Board through the Melanesian Mission,” writes Sister Joseph from the Government leper hospital on Guadalcanal in the British Solomons.
“The patients were delighted with the shoes and 100 pairs were given out. We still have some for future needs. I cannot fully express our gratitude for this splendid gift. Footwear is a big concern.”
