RUGBY ROUND-UP Otago Beaten At Oamaru

Fiery and rugged in the forwards, North Otago made great capital from the disjointed play of Otago to win a representative Rugby match at Oamaru on Saturday, 17-11. In a penalty-riddled first half, T. Conlan kicked three goals for North Otago—one of which clearly dropped under the crossbar—to give the home side a 9-3 lead. In the second half North Otago scorec two tries, both resulting from blunders among the Otago backs, to lead 17-3. Otago came back over the final 10 minutes with two tries, but its effort never really reached a high level. R. Barber and I. S. T. Smith scored for North Otago, Conlan

converting one and kicking three penalties. For Otago, K. Prain, W. Landrebe and D. Edward scored tries, E. Taylor converting one. King Country maintained an unbeaten record this season when it beat Waikato, 16-9, at Hamilton. It was its sixth successive win, and Waikato’s fifth loss in six games. Waikato led, , 6-0, with less than 10 minutes to go in the first half, but from that stage King Country generally had the better of the play. King Country’s points came from tries by G. Peake and R. Paki, two conversions and a penalty goal by R. Parr, and a

drop goal by J. Turner.

B. Guest and J. Mackenzie scored tries for Waikato, and D. Flavell kicked a penalty. Hawke’s Bay beat Manawatu, 17-8, under the most atrocious conditions seen at Hastings for many years. The Bay led, 14-3, at half-time, but then failed to take advantage of the strong wind. Hawke’s Bay had supremacy in the line-outs, winning 51 to 17, and won four tight heads to Manawatu’s one. For Hawke’s Bay, Loughlan and Smith scored tries, and Small kicked three penalties and a conversion. Manawatu’s points came from a try by Paewai and a penalty and a conversion by Taitoko.
