HEADS BOW IN TOKYO

Anniversary Of VJ-Day (N Z . Press Assn —Copyright) ) TOKYO. Aug. 15. The Emperor Hirohito and Empress Nagako bowed their heads for a one-minute silent prayer today as the nation observed the twentieth anniversary of its World War 11 surrender and mourned its three million dead. Sirens blew, church bells rang, and temple gongs resounded at noon—the hour when 20 years ago the Emperor told the nation that the war was over in defeat.

People in the streets of central Tokyo seemed unaffected by the sirens, and traffic continued to flow.

The Imperial couple attended a mass memorial ceremony at Btsdokan—the octagonal Olympic judo hall near the palace.
