Russians Photograph Moon’s Far Side

MOSCOW. August 14 , Russian scientists announced today that they had photographed more hidden regions on the far side of the moon—the side never seen from earth. The pictures were taken by ;an unmanned Zond HI satelllite. The high-quality shots, 'about twice as distinct as the [average television picture, ;were relayed back to earth during 38 separate radio-T V I links beginning on July 29. the Soviet news agency, Tass, i reported.

They were said to show craters and mountain ranges. The photographs were "good enough to show numer-

ous details of the lunar relief [of great interest to science.”; [Tass said. The photographs will be I published at a later date. They are likely to be shown simultaneously on Moscow television, and will probably be relayed to the West through the Eurovision international television network. Only the Russians have photographed the moon’s far side.

They have now done it; twice —first in 1959 with their) Luna 111 spaceship which took [pictures from about 40.000 miles from the moon’s surface. ; Zond 111 was much nearer i to the moon and its cameras snapped away at a range of about ~7500 miles.
