Whitebail
Sir, —Put into plain words, the reply of the Secretary of Marine to my inquiries indicates that the Marine Department is most concerned about whitebait conservation. To this end it has closed some areas that have never been fished intensively, has no power to limit the number of fishermen on any waters, and has a research staff making investigations. This last seems at variance with a recent news announcement that the only person engaged in whitebait research has left the country. The 600 whitebait fishermen on the West. Coast, concerned at the steady decline in catches over the last 20 years, will be pleased to know of the steps being taken in their interests.—Yours, etc. GORDON TAIT. August 14, 1965.
