More Forest Fires In Southern France
(N Z P A - Reuter—Copyright) TOULON (France), August 12. Shortage of water hampered fire-fighters in their efforts to extinguish a series of new forest fires in southern France yesterday.
The destruction of scores of telegraph poles and electricity pylons made communications difficult. But a drop in the wind held out hopes of containing the isolated outbreaks
No dwellings were threatened. Hundreds of extra firemen and troops worked to avoid a repetition of last week’s blaze which killed two persons injured 15 and caused an estimated 40 million francs damage. Stretches of pines, oaks and scrubland were burning yesterday in at least seven places in the southern departments of Var, Alpes Maritimes, Bouches Du Rhone and Gard. Tanker lorries were sent with water from Marseilles and other towns.
