Services Of Golf Architect Sought
Details of the movements in New Zealand of a leading British golf course architect, Commander W. Harris—and the fees he charges—might be sought by the Harewood club as the result of a discussion at meeting of the Canterbury Provincial Golf Association’s executive.
Mr D. H. Lawrence (Harewood) said his dub had heard of Commander Harris's visit to assist in the development of a further nine holes at the Wellington Golf Club’s course at Heretaunga. The dub, he said had written to the New Zealand Golf
Council to see if the architect was available for general use. It was interested in obtaining his services for the designing of a new course on land recently bought by the club. But it wished to have his services free of charge, because of the dub’s work for the golfing youth of Canterbury.
Mr C. J. Ward (Christchurch), a member of the New Zealand council, said the fees for an architect would be in the vicinity of £2OOO to £3OOO for one course, with travelling and accommodation expenses on top of that. “I think you’re a gone coon if you want it done for nothing,” he said to Mr Lawrence.
Mr E. G. Batstone (Waitikiri) said other Christchurch clubs might be interested in obtaining Commander Harris’s advice and, in that way, the cost could be shared .
While the association was awaiting the reaction from clubs, Harewood could write to the Wellington club seeking details of Commander Harris’s visit, said the president (Mr G. V. Williams).
