CHECKERS CONTINUE WINNING RUN

Checkers A continued its winning way with a convincing victory over Rebels A when the women's indoor basketball competition games were played at Cowles Stadium. Brighton A displayed good form to beat Rex A and Rangiora accounted for University. . Checkers went quickly into the lead when H. Middlemiss cut between two guards to net a fine shot. Rebels had plenty of possession but the close player-toplayer defence maintained by Checkers forced Rebels into hasty long shots which were well wide of the mark. After a close first-half in which it led by 6-0, Checkers took control in the second half and cut its opponents out under the basket to dominate the play with S. Chamberlain in good form, they took a commanding lead to win 22-3. . . Brighton scored a convincing

win over its old rivals, Rex A, when they met for the third time this season. From the first jump ball Brighton gained possession and forced Rex on to the defensive. Good rebounding by the centre H. Hutton, and the guard, P. Millar, kept Brighton on attack but it was some time before Brighton could complete the movement with a goal.

The scoring rate remained low for much of the first half until B. Ross cut through the Rex defence to net several good goals and put Brighton in front. Against the zone defence played by Brighton, Rex was surprisingly inept and rarely looked in a scoring position. Better guarding by V. Young and J. Taylor allowed Rex more chances in the second spell, and fine interceptions by the forward, M. Hansen, kept it well in the play but shots went wide. Brighton tightened its play and took control for the latter stages of the game when well placed set shot by B. Ross enabled it to win 16-7.

In 'an uninspiring game marred by poor handling and inaccurate shooting, Rangiora beat University A, 17-4. Both teams were well matched on defence but Rangiora’s D. Holland and L. Rollinson were sufficiently accurate with their shots at goal to give Rangiora a winning margin.
