Kumai Out Of Sorts After Race
Kumai has not shaken off the effects of the virus, which affected him after his win at the South Canterbury Hunt Club’s meeting.
He blew hard and was coughing after the Grand National Hurdles on Tuesday, so his second placing was meritorious.
Kumai is to be kept active until the spring grass comes. His Dunedin owner-breeder, Mr T. K. S. Sidey, hopes to have the KurdistaM gelding given some education for steeplechasing in the meantime. Kumai could have race experience over country in the Otago Hunt Cup at Wingatui on September 4. Kumai will probably be brought back into work again next February, and he may do much of his racing next year over country. He has won 21 races and has earned over £15,000 and his hurdling record is three wins and a second in four starts. To Spell Saturnian is unlikely to race again until next year. He was unable to gallop very freely in the Grand National Hurdles because he was getting down on his heels. “He was getting down on them in front and behind and they were red raw after the race,” said his rider, B. J. Clements.
Saturnian, Awapuni’s lead-
ing stake earner for the season just ended, will return north next Sunday with other Manawatu horses flown south for the Grand National meeting. J. R. Dowling, who received two periods of suspension at Riccarton on Tuesday—the second is up to 5 p.m. on September 14—may move to settle in the North Island soon. He was considering a move from Wingatui before the winter, but delayed a decision. Dowling has not yet decided where he will live in the North Island. He will take a trip north “to have a look round.”
