Preparations For Next A. And P. Show

Progress in preparations for the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s show next November was reported at a meeting of the association’s general committee yesterday. A leading Australian Merino judge, Mr G. T. Walker, of the Ledgworth stud, Yass, New South Wales, had accepted an invitation to judge the Merino section in the show, the secretary (Mr H. M. Studholme) said. The draught horse committee had decided unanimously that draught horses should no longer be included in the association’s shows, Mr J. J. Wyllie said. “They will be here for this year’s show and for the Royal show next year, but it is the unanimous opinion of the committee that they should go after that.” Mr Wyllie’s report was adopted. The Rangitikei and Cambridge polo teams would play on each of the three days of the show, said the chairman of the ring programme committee (Mr T. C. Grigg). “We’ve got two top teams,” he added. The Rangitikei team had a goal rating of 11, and the Cambridge team was a past winner of the Savile Cup.

The meeting approved the committee’s recommendation that the association support the Royal Agricultural Society’s efforts to bring the Kelly Brothers, who present comedy acts with horses, to New Zealand. A circuit of the country’s seven main shows by the Australian performers was planned, Mr

Grigg said. The Kelly Brothers travelled all over Australia, and would perform in the Royal show at Melbourne before coming here. A recommendation for the inclusion of a gun-dog display was also approved. During the grand parade on November 12 the Ellesmere Highland Pipe Band would play, and the St. Andrew’s College Pipe Band would play in the parade on the previous day, Mr Studholme said. After recent heavy rain, the condition of the ring was causing concern, he reported. Water was lying on the surface, instead of soaking down to the tile drains, and extensive mole drainage would be carried out in an attempt to overcome the problem. Tenders had been let for the demolition of the old Canterbury Court-Twigger street boundary fence, which would be replaced with a corru-gated-iron fence Bft high. Renewal of iron on the grandstand roof was continuing.
