AUCKLAND, August 11
The president of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce (Mr T. R. Sussex) has sent a telegram to the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) objecting to the Government decision to rebuild part of the Auckland Prison.
The telegram reads: “If the Minister of Justice represented an Auckland constituency, we do not believe the reinstatement of the prison, other than as a remand institution, would proceed. "No Auckland member could face his constituents, having approved the reconstruction of an institution, which for many years has been a reproach not only to Auckland, but also to the administration of the prisons system.
“We admit the necessity of a remand unit handy to the courts, but we object vehemently to the rebuilding of this institution, even on a modified scale.” The headmaster of Auckland Boys’ Grammar School (Mr W. H. Cooper) has also criticised the Government decision to rebuild the prison. “It’s obvious that the rebuilding is intended to be permanent," he said. “This is going to cut the availability of land for school grounds, and we desperately need them.”
