Citizens’ Candidates For Council And Boards
With one councillor retiring and one standing as an independent, the Christchurch Citizens’ Association has a longer list of new candidates than usual for the City Council election to be held on October 9.
The final selection was made by the association’s general committee last evening and announced by the chairman (Mr H. P. Smith). Miss Mary McLean, a councillor for 21 years, is not seeking re-election. Mr T. D. Flint, a councillor for six years and chairman of the traffic committee for the last three, has withdrawn from the association and will stand as an independent. Those apart, all sitting councillors have been chosen again. The association's mavoral candidate. Mr P. J. Skellerup. I a councillor since 1958 and chairman of the reserves committee, will also contest a council seat. Three former city councillors have been chosen. They are Mr L. G. Amos, who was on the council from 1944 to 1956 and was chairman of the electricity committee for several years; Mr G. A. G. Connal, a solicitor and chairman of the Civic Music Council: and Mr G. D. Hattaway, a retired accountant and member of the Christchurch Transport Board. Both Messrs Connal and Hattaway served one term on the council and were defeated three years ago. Both will be overseas at the time of the election. Mr Amos has retained his interest in local bodies as a member of the Lyttelton Harbour Board, on which he represents Riccarton-Waimairi. and the Christchurch-Lyttelton Road Tunnel Authority, to which he was appointed by the City Council. The association's nominations will be:—

Olds, P. J. Skellerup, and H. P. Smith. New Candidates.—Mrs H. Garrett, a prominent member of the Federation of University Women who led a campaign for jury service by women; Messrs L. G. Amos, G. L. Bradbury, a public accountant; B. Britten, a city businessman; G. R. Burrowes, president of the Canterbury Progress League: G A. G. Connal, W. V. Cowles, a business executive and son of a former councillor, the late Mr W. J. Cowles: G. D. Hattaway, and C. G. Steel, a member of the City Planning Study Group. Bennett, ‘Professor A. J. Danks, Mr J. H. Pickles, a public accountant, and Dr. E. B. Reilly, a dentist. North Canterbury Catchment Board.—‘Mr A. T. Bell, *Dr W. R. Holmes, Messrs L. W. McCaskill, a former member of the board and recently retired Director of the Tussock and Grasslands Institute, iand R. A. Witbrock, a farmer and chairman of the ChristI church-Lyttelton Road Tunnel I Authority. The association is also putting up two candidates for the Hospital Board for Waimairi. They are Dr. D. Macmillan, a sitting member, and Mr C. F. Whitty, a company director.
