REHEARING GRANTED
Charge Against Petty Officer j f.V.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Aug. 10. Convicted last week when he admitted stealing £206 by failing to account, a Naval petty officer, William James Marr, was today granted a rehearing with a plea of not guilty. After hearing counsel, Mr H T. D. Knight, Mr M. C. Astley, S.M., remanded Marr on bail to August 31, for the rehearing. Marr is alleged to have stolen £206 from the petty officers’ mess in H.M.N.Z.S. Philomel between March 1 and June 30, while he was in charge of the mes. Granting the rehearing, the Magistrate said Marr had explained the deficiency by saying he had helped himself to free beer and cigarettes. “At Naval rates, I fail to see how this could account for a deficiency of £5O a month,” the Magistrate said.
