Police Called Wrong Gang
In the confusion of the Paparua prison riot, the police called out a Christchurch Municipal Electricity Department gang which, on arrival at the gaol, could do little but help put up spotlights because of unfamiliarity with the power reticulation, which is, the responsibility of the Central Canterbury Electric Power Board. This 'was explained in a letter received by the board at its meeting yesterday from the District Commissioner of Works (Mr D. B. Dallas), who said that while no harm had been done, danger could arise from a supply authority being called in to work on another’s system. As this suggested a loophole in the civil defence organisation, said Mr Dallas, he had drawn the attention of the regional civil defence office to the Incident.
Mr L. T. Griffith asked why the M.E.D. had not queried the request. A senior M.E.D. must have authorised the trip, and would have known that the prison was in the board’s district
