Roman Catholic Schools

Sir, —Bishop Ashby is to be congratulated on his bold move to solve our Roman Catholic education problems by sending primers to State schools. It is best to send primers as they will suffer less harm at this level to their religious and social development. As Bishop Ashby says in his pastoral letter, evidence has shown that a Standard 1 child can make up lost ground in religious education with comparative rapidity. It is only a temporary retrenchment, and does not mean that the church has changed its views since 1877 when it, together with Bishop Harper, the first Anglican Bishop of Christchurch, opposed the secular education clauses of the Education Act, which also made education compulsory. —Yours, etc., INTERESTED. August 8. 1965.
