Mental Hospital Control
Sir, —Mr Cox’s quotations are out of date (1948 and 1946). In recent years we have read of a strike of doctors in Belgium and the threat of mass resignations from the Health Service in Britain. State control of health services is evidently incompatible with medical ethics. The members of the P.S.A. heed not fear too much about their superannuation. The Education Department worked out a scheme whereby the superannuation rights of teachers in private schools are safeguarded. A similar scheme could be devised by the Health Department. If mental hospitals are taken oyer by hospital boards, the chronic shortage of psychiatric nurses would be overcome by ah influx of trainee registered nurses, who would accept a turn of duty at Sunnyside as part of their basic training. In another 20 years the stigma now attached to admission to this institution would be forgotten. —Yours, etc., M. S. STARKY. Amberley, August 9, 1965.
